Fish Pulusu Recipe(Chepala Pulusu Curry)
Fish Pulusu or Chepala Pulusu is a traditional Telangana style stewed fish that’s a staple in the Telugu speaking households. It is spicy, hot and tangy with a thin or runny stew/ sauce. It is uaually eaten with rice but also goes well with chapati or parathas. In this post my Mom’s popular recipe to make Fish pulusu. Plan and prepare this ahead of time because it tastes great the next day, or at least 3 to 4 hours later.
About Fish Pulusu
Fish Pulusu is traditional dish, we use tamarind , red chili powder, turmeric etc. But the secret ingredient was masala powder combination of roasted fenugreek seeds, jeera seeds and coriander seeds powder. Fish pulusu is best served with hot steamed rice, making it a comforting and satisfying meal. Simple to prepare yet packed with authentic South Indian flavors, this dish perfectly represents the rustic and soulful cooking style of Telangana cuisine.
How to make Fish Pulusu (stepwise photos)
Ingredients:
- 1 kg fresh fish pieces
- 2 medium size onions
- 1 green chili
- turmeric powder
- coriander powder
- ginger and garlic paste
- Spices like bay 1 leaf, 2cloves, 2 cinnamon sticks, 2 cardamom
- red chili powder
- Salt as required
- 3 tbsp oil
- medium size Tomato
Preparation Process:
1. Clean the Fish pieces. Marinate the fish pieces with red chili powder, turmeric powder, salt. Keep it aside for 15 minutes while you prepare up the rest.
2. Take chopped onions into the jar and add some stone leaf( for good taste) , make it into fine paste. Soak tamarind in water. when softened, squeeze with your fingers, extract the juice and filter it and keep it aside.



3. Take a Pan and Heat oil in a pan . Add green chili, all spices and onions paste , Saute until it gets golden brown.



4. Add ginger-garlic paste and fry until raw smell disappears. Add chopped tomato and cook till soft and mushy.
5. Add turmeric, red chili powder, mix well and cook for 2-3 minutes until oil separates.



6. Pour the Tamarind water and add water as you required. Add salt as per your taste and Coriander powder and Coconut powder(Optional). Let the curry boil for 8- 10 minutes until it gets thick.



7. Now Add Fish pieces into the boiling curry and Don’t stir with a spoon (shake the pan lightly . Cook on medium flame for 10-15minutes.



8. Garnish the curry with coriander leaves. Turn off flame and let it rest for at least 30 minutes for best taste.


9. Telangana Style Fish Pulusu(Chepala Pulusu) Curry is ready. Serve the recipe with rice and chepati.
